Cathy Cupp - Artisan Member

"My most enjoyable and creative weaving is when I put materials left over from classes or commissioned work in piles and then make whatever basket I can out of each pile."

Artist History:

When Cathy made her first basket in 1985, she had no idea that it was the start of a career. Now, 17 years later, she owns and operates a basket supply business, teaches weaving both in her shop and for other basket guilds and associations, and has created over 3300 baskets.

Over the years, she has experimented with white oak, hickory bark, Russian birch bark, ash, and most materials native to the Shenandoah Valley. Because she specializes in design, she has focused mainly on rattan and round reed because of the easy ACVilability of materials. "I specialize in traditional baskets with a creative flare. As I am finishing one, ideas are already flying on what to create next. If I had to harvest and process my own materials, I would be so limited in the time I had to weave that my head would probably explode. 'So many baskets, so little time!' "

Cathy and her husband, Bennie, share a place overlooking the South Fork of the Shenandoah River with an English Setter named "Buckeye".
