My life setting is my inspiration. I have always been drawn to the power
of the mountains and the drama of the changing seasons. As I travel on
horseback through fields and forests, the beauty is breath taking.
In nature, forms are not symmetrical, but unique and individual. Clay
gives me a tangible medium to translate flashes of images or fragments
of sensation into vessels that are functional sculpture. The tenacity
of clay combined with its grace and fluidity, allows boldness and energy.
My pieces reveal the force of wind, the rhythm of falling rain, the warmth
of the sun, and the fluidity of time, as I see them in nature.
A life long resident of Central Virginia, I call my studio Virginia
Clay. With a strong background in functional pottery, I am fundamentally
engaged in the fine craft tradition. Clay forms are the signature of
time, leaving traces- images - impressions of man and culture for present
and future visual exploration.
Paula L. Brown - Steedly was born in Charlottesville, Va. She completed
a B.S. at East Tennessee State University and a M.F.A. at Louisiana State
University. She attended Penland School.
About The Medium
Clay gives me a medium that is tangible. I developed my own clay body
to accommodate the immediate and intense ways I work using varied combinations
of forming techniques.
The materials are non toxic, non porous, and many of the finishes are
matt. The stoneware is resilient, coarse, with colors ranging from rich
brown to buff maturing at 2380 degrees (cone 10)
.
I work with varied combinations of forming techniques. Emphasizing the
malleable qualities of the medium, I let the clay suggest the outcome.
A certificate of authenticity is provided with this one of a kind work.
